Get Your Car Ready For Winter On Us!

A little preparation makes the cold season easier to bear for you…and your car!

Changes in the season don’t just affect you – they also affect your car. You wouldn’t head out into a Pittsburgh winter without a coat and gloves – don’t expect your car to function properly without some attention to its winter needs, too.

These tips can help prepare your car:

Stock an Emergency Kit. You should never drive in extreme and dangerous conditions (like blizzards or subzero temperatures) without an emergency kit in your car. Include items like a blanket or sleep bag, candles and matches, a first aid kit, flares, food items, jumper cables, and water bottles.

Replace Wiper Blades. Wiper blades need to be replaced more frequently than you might think. Most blades start to lose effectiveness in as little as six months. New wiper blades will ensure you are prepared for winter flurries.

Maintain the Battery. The car battery takes a beating when the temperatures drop. To check a conventional battery, remove the plastic caps on the top and check the fluid level. If the fluid is low, add distilled water. On maintenance-free batteries, check that the window at the top of the battery indicates a fully charged state. If it’s more than five years old and shows signs of weakness, replace the battery with a top-rated model.

Consider Snow Tires. Driving in snow can be very difficult and sometimes dangerous; still, the reality is you need to get to work. Mounting the right tires on your car or truck can give you a huge advantage. Many car makers and tire manufacturers recommend changing all four tires to snow tires in the winter.

Get a Windshield Treatment. An easily overlooked area of your car is your windshield. If you have ever driven behind another vehicle kicking up wet, dirty road snow, then you already have a true appreciation for windshield washer fluid. For best results, select a washer fluid with an antifreeze solution.

Taking the time to prepare before the cold temperatures roll in can save you a lot of time (and aggravation) this winter.

Is Your Car Ready For Summer Road Trips?

Do your summer plans include a road trip? If you are like millions of Americans hitting the road, the last thing you want is to end up stranded on the side of the road. A pre-trip vehicle service is key to ensuring you make it to your destination as planned.

Dean Honda recommends the following pre-trip checklist:

  • Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Underinflated tires can reduce a vehicle’s fuel efficiency and uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment.
  • Get an oil change. Be sure that you are replacing your oil at the recommended intervals. If some time has passed since your last change, do it before our trip.
  • Check the brakes. Make sure your brakes are at least 50 percent. If they are lower than that, and you are driving more than 1,000 miles round trip have the brakes changed.
  • Check the fluids, including power steering, windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant. Top off any fluids that are low and buy extra bottles to keep in the truck, in case you need them on your trip.
  • Get new wipers. If it has been awhile since you replaced your windshield wipers, consider changing them before your trip.
  • Check to make sure all lights are working. This includes brakes, turn signals, headlights and taillights.
  • Get a tune up. Ultimately, the best thing you can do to prep for a road trip is have a professional technician perform a tune up to ensure your vehicle is running smoothly. Schedule an appointment at the Dean Honda Service Center online.

The Dean Honda Service Center is here to help! We service all makes and models and offer extending hours, including Saturdays. In addition, when you get your vehicle serviced with us, you receive a complementary tire and alignment check, as well as a car wash!

Is Your Car Ready for Spring Driving?

Spring showers bring May flowers…and wet driving conditions.

We all know that winter conditions can make for dangerous driving, but spring weather brings its own driving challenges. Along with warmer weather, spring brings rain, potholes and increased traffic. Review these safety tips before you hit the road.

In Your Driveway

  • Perform basic maintenance. Spring is the perfect time to schedule a visit at the Dean Honda Service Center. We can check your fluid levels, suspension system, brakes and more to reduce the risk of a breakdown. Now’s also a good time to schedule an alignment visit.
  • Change your windshield wipers. With spring comes rainstorms. Putting new wipers on your car will ensure you’re ready!

  • Check your lights. Make sure that all lights are working – headlights, brake lights, etc. Also, remember to always use your headlights during a rainstorm and when road conditions are less than ideal.

  • Keep your tires properly inflated. Full tires can reduce the damage caused by potholes and other road hazards.

  • Learn how to use your side mirror camera. Most new Honda vehicles come equipped with a side mirror camera. They cover your blind spots and keep you safer on the road.

On The Road

  • Share the road. Warmer weather brings out motorcyclists and bicyclists. Be on the lookout for increased traffic.

  • Avoid cruise control. Using cruise control in wet conditions can increase the chance of losing control of the vehicle.
  • Watch for pedestrians and animals. As the weather warms up, expect more pedestrians, especially in residential and shopping areas. You will also see more animals near the roadway.

  • Watch out for potholes. Spring is the time for potholes. Deep potholes can throw your car out of alignment or worse, and result in costly repairs.
  • Slow down and leave room. Slowing down during wet weather can reduce your chance of hydroplaning. You should also leave plenty of room between your car and the car in front of you, in case you skid.

What You Need To Know About Auto Insurance

So you just bought the car of your dreams! Congratulations!

Before you hit the road, the first step is to protect your new purchase, and yourself, from dangers on the road. This is where auto insurance comes in.

You know that you need auto insurance but do you know how much you need? What “comprehensive coverage” means? If you are covered in a rental car?

Today, we want to answer some of your most common auto insurance questions.

1.     How much auto insurance do I need?

Most states require you to carry a minimum amount of Liability insurance and provide proof of insurance to register a vehicle or renew your license. To determine what additional coverage you may need, consider:

  • How and when you drive
  • What you drive
  • Who is in the car with you

To learn more about the coverage required in Pennsylvania, click here.

2.     How do insurance companies assess my risk?

Your risk is determined based on a number of factors that determine how likely you are to file a claim in the future. Some of these factors include driving history and location.

3.     What does “comprehensive coverage” mean?

Comprehensive coverage means that your car is protected from damage not caused by an accident. This includes damage from theft, vandalism, natural disaster, falling options, fire, hail, flood or animal damage.

 4.     If I rent a car, am I covered?

In most cases, Allstate provides coverage that extends to your rented vehicle. If you’re not sure what is covered in your policy, contact us today!

5.     Will my insurance premium increase if I file a claim?

Every policyholder’s situation is unique, so depending on your circumstances, your premium may be affected. If you are concerned, don’t hesitate to give us a call. Allstate also offers Accident Forgiveness, which may help prevent your rates from going up just because of an accident, even if it’s your fault.

Dean Honda now has an Allstate Agency onsite to provide customers with the auto coverage they need, at a price they can afford. If you are looking for auto, home, condo, renters, motorcycle, business, or life insurance, call us at 412-896-5711.

5 Reasons To Consider Leasing

5 Reasons To Consider Leasing

In the market for a new car? Maybe you are focused on picking the type of car, the color, and the extra features, but there are other important decisions that need to be made. Perhaps the biggest decision is whether to lease or buy the car.

Although many people focus on purchasing a car, leasing is also a great, and popular, option. There are a number of reasons that leasing a car may be the best fit for you, your lifestyle, and your budget.

What does it mean to lease a car?

First things first…what does it mean to lease a car? Leasing a car allows you to drive the newest models on the market without the large down payment that comes with buying a car or taking out a loan. After putting down a small deposit, you make monthly payments until the lease term is up and you return the car.

What are the benefits of leasing a car?

  1. You will have more cash in your pocket. With a lease, you may be able to negotiate for a lower down payment with higher monthly payments or a longer lease period that spreads out the monthly payments. Leasing requires less cash up front and keeps the money in your pocket.

  1. You can lease a car that you may not be able to afford otherwise. Paying a small deposit for a new luxury car is easier than trying to come up with cash to finance one. You can get the exact car, color, and features that you are looking for, without paying the premium that comes with buying a car.

  1. Some leases include maintenance in the monthly cost, saving money on costly out-of-pocket repairs. When you buy a new or pre-owned car, the costs do not stop at the time of purchase. The cost of upkeep and maintenance over the life of the car can be substantial.

  1. A lease is a great option if you don’t typically put a lot of miles on your car. Lease terms typically include mile limits. If you are someone who works close to home, or even from home, or don’t plan to travel a lot in your vehicle, a lease is an excellent option. You will not be paying a lot of money for a car you will not be using a lot.

  1. If you find yourself shopping for a new car every few years, leasing is a good way to make this happen. Lease terms vary but are typically 2, 3 or 4 years. This allows you to try out a new car every couple of years.

The Bottom Line

Leasing is a great way to get the car of your dreams and still have money left in your pocket. Deciding whether to buy or lease your next vehicle is a decision you must make based on what is important to you.

What is the right price for a pre-owned car?

The United States Census Bureau reports that on average, each American owns two vehicles. Yet only nine percent of the global population has a car. About 240 million of the 600 million cars, vans, and light trucks in the world are right here in the U.S. We live in a culture where having your own ride is considered a necessity, not a luxury. Just like any other necessity, you’ve got to find the best way to fit a vehicle purchase into your budget.

“What’s the right price for a pre-owned car?” That is a common concern, according to Tom Dean, Sales Consultant at Dean Honda’s pre-owned lot on Lebanon Church Road in West Mifflin. He says, “That is one of the questions I’m frequently asked, on and off of the sales floor. A vehicle is a big investment, and it is also an extension of the buyer’s values, so consumers are naturally concerned about getting a good deal.”

There is no pat answer for “the right price,” but taking a few moments to define your values and apply them to pre-owned vehicles that interest you, is well worth the time.

Who buys used cars?

We used to think used cars were only for a shade tree mechanic kid or a young couple on a shoestring budget. But in today’s challenging economy, people all over the Pittsburgh area have discovered that a pre-owned car makes good sense in plenty of other situations.

“I’m putting Yinzers in quality, pre-owned Hondas for a lot of reasons,” Tom states. “Some want a second car for the daily commute, to avoid loading up miles on their new vehicle. Maybe they need a fuel efficient alternative to a pickup truck, or a dependable car for a college student in the family. Some are paying off loans or mortgages and just don’t want to add a new car payment to the budget right now.”

What’s the WRONG price for a pre-owned car?

For most people, the amount of money required to purchase any car is meaningful. So there’s always a temptation to buy the cheapest one available. That’s not usually the best criteria. The odds of it being the right car for your needs are extremely slim. The odds of it leaving you stranded or not fitting your lifestyle, however, are pretty good.

So, what is the right price for a pre-owned car?

Determining the right price starts with a values-based decision. What is important to YOU?

Why hybrids matter

A hybrid vehicle simply has more than one distinct power source to move it. The 2000 Honda Insight was the first hybrid available in the United States. Prior to that, mainstream vehicles were fueled by gasoline or diesel. The option of a hybrid car or truck has now captivated America’s attention, but there is still some reservation about breaking out of our comfortable norms.

The 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid combines a robust gasoline engine with a clean running electric motor, to reduce emissions and improve fuel consumption. Let’s take a look at why a vehicle like the Accord matters – to your image, pocketbook, family, and global living space.

Appearance isn’t compromised. Honda creates hybrids that are virtually identical in outward appearance and interior fit and finish to their single-fuel counterparts. You get the benefits of a hybrid without giving up a bit of flash.

Safety and comfort aren’t compromised, either. Honda hybrids have the same interior luxuries and safety features as non-hybrids, plus they run super smooth and quiet. The shift between gas and electric power is seamless, and the battery continuously recharges as you drive.

You will save money on gas, every week. Nick Sherman, Internet Sales Manager at Dean Honda says, “With the Accord Hybrid’s 47 combined (city and highway) mpg rating, customers who drive about 15,000 a year save over $500 annually. That’s an extra $40 or more in your pocket each month.”

You will qualify for tax incentives – a federal tax credit in 2013 of up to $7,500 when you purchase a hybrid. You may be eligible for additional state and local clean fuel enticements, too.

Hybrids are affordable. While the up front cost is a little higher than a gas-powered vehicle, that margin is shrinking. And with a reliable car that looks stylish and lasts many years, the difference is amortized over a longer period of time. “Our pricing is very competitive, and the average Honda owner keeps a vehicle longer than owners of any other brand,” says Dan Zediker, New Car Operations Manager. “With fuel savings and tax breaks, hybrids make financial sense in the long term.”

You are helping to preserve the environment. Hybrids not only get better mileage, they also produce about 90 percent less tailpipe emissions than a similar gas-powered vehicle. That means doing your part toward reduced dependency on fossil fuels and cleaner air, now and into the future.

You set a great example for your kids. It’s easy to talk about making the world a better place for their generation, but driving an eco-friendly car is daily evidence of your commitment. It speaks louder to them than words.

You’ll roll in good company. There’s a definite coolness quotient to driving an ecologically responsible vehicle. Just ask Cameron Diaz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Larry David, Ryan Gosling, and Will Ferrell; celebs who are all proud of their hybrids.

Gas-electric hybrids do matter. They instill a sense of doing the right thing and caring, bringing our global society just a little closer for all the right reasons.
